Hyaline of Fractures
Cyano, copper verdigris, copper oxide, sodium carbonate, citric acid on canvas
140 x 100cm

Hyaline means translucent or glass in appearance. The surface of this piece holds so much energy, as if capturing the moment of shattering light.

Expansive experimentation with mineralogical reactions and oxidisations has resulted in a fissuring of the surface. The red and yellow tones seen in these works are created through the addition of alkali and base minerals. I have further extended the aesthetic, expressive range of my practice through the addition of handmade coper verdigris ink.

Active mark-making acts as a vehicle to explore concepts of ‘mapping’ solar, tidal and elemental energy. I douse, drip, and submerge colour, tweaking ph levels, and allowing the surface to come alive. The surface of the works fissures and splinters as colour crystallizes into nucleated patterns creating exciting and visually stimulating images that engage viewers in both scientific and organic processes.

I used an additional element of fracturing, cutting the canvas and stitching it back together, as a way of interrupting the flow of the image in order to invite the viewer to engage with the process over the composition.
