The variety of solar and weather conditions under which these paintings were made showcases the wide spectrum of colour and form possible through the cyanotype medium. We have introduced of use of sodium carbonate in our exposures which creates the vivid, playful bursts of yellow within the oxidisation.
The mouth of the Carlton River is a curve of soft sand and strong current that runs out into enormous bay of water that is flanked by both the Tasman and South Arm peninsulas. The lustrous navy, silver and deep yellows of the enormous oyster shells that are found in the area were a strong undercurrent for the influence of colour in the paintings created at Carlton River. Light drizzle in Honeymoon Bay, Tasmania gave the paintings a dappled effect over which we drew out darker purple tones using wine tannins we got from a winemaker in the Barossa Valley. We added white clay gathered near Trephina Gorge in Alice Springs to add a pale mistlike quality to the paintings.
