Cyanotype and sea water on paper.
305 x 404 cm
September 2023
On numerous winding drives through the mountains of the Inagh Valley we passed Kylemore Abbey, turned off at Letterfrack towards Renvyle and continued along the beautiful coast roads that lead to a stretch of sandy beach that rests below Mweelrea mountain at the mouth of Killary Fjord. Glassilaun, or glas ilaun (green island) became a kind of punctuation mark during our time in Connemara. We returned numerous times and experienced the coastline’s ever changing weather and light. We bathed one afternoon in crystal water and walked on warm sand. Later in the week we swam in grey wind, running to the car with our towels to get out from beneath enormous mauve storm clouds.
One evening after exploring the island at low tide we set up camp on a wee sandy mound surrounded by purple rock. The sea made its way around us as we swam in the sunset and painted cyanotypes with seaweed on the beach. The resulting works are full of bubbling coastal energy. A wide range of blues were brought out by the sun and the salt to make dynamic works that feel like snapshots of an underwater dive through clear water with shapes of moving air and seaweed moving coolly in the drift.
